Week 1....and GO!!!

Week one is in the books!

We had a great first week of fifth grade! We spent some time getting to know each other and making new friends. We completed classmate interviews and played several getting to know you games. Mrs. Grewe enjoyed reading the "All About Me" worksheets that we completed. We also had the chance to get to know students in the other fifth grade classes during recess. We did some fifth grade team building activities, we organized ourselves, without talking, by height. Then we broke into three groups, and had to pass a hula hoop down our chain, everyone did a great job!

In Math, We have been working on Place Value. This is a core math topic that students need to have a firm grasp of as we move through the year. We applied place value to our addition skills as well. We completed our math placement test, the teachers are reviewing our scores, and scholars will be placed in their math group by the start of next week. A parent letter went home today (8/22) explaining the math placement, please be sure to ask your scholar for the letter.

In Geography we have been review latitude and longitude. We played a mapping game using our skills to find different places around the world (winners got candy!!).

We have not done much in Science yet, but we did watch a fun Flocabulary video to introduce the scientific method. We will be working more with the scientific method over the next few days.

We dove head first into our first novel study, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Everyone seems very interested to see where the tale will take Mary Lennox. We will continue our study over the next several weeks. This book will not be coming home with scholars, we are waiting for the rest to arrive, so all of fifth grade is sharing. We are covering the story in great depth in class!

We have been reviewing our phonograms and doing a brief review of our handwriting skills. We will continue with these skills over the coming weeks. Handwriting is extremely important, please be practicing handwriting (print and cursive) skills at home! We also did a quick review of types of sentences to get us started on our grammar journey this year.

Well that's just a quick peek into our first few days of school. Check back next week to see what our first Star Scholar Blogger has to say!
